Mobility and the impact of movement on life expectancy

Published in September 8, 2025

Have you ever stopped to think about the impact exercise has on your health and how long you’ll live? The answer might surprise you: staying active is one of the most important factors in living longer—and better.

According to a study published in the journal JAMA Network Open, ...regular physical activity is directly linked to a reduced risk of mortality, especially among older adults. And the best part is: the benefits don’t diminish over time! In fact, they only increase.

Why does being active make such a difference?

  • Engaging in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week reduces the risk of death by 141%;
  • At about 300 minutes per week, this reduction could reach 26%;
  • Even small amounts of exercise (less than the recommended minimum) have a positive impact;
  • The benefits are even greater among older adults, which shows that it’s never too late to start.

Aging well starts now

Science shows that up to 70% of the aging process is related to lifestyle—not genetics. And among the key factors for maintaining health as we age is physical activity: it preserves independence, improves circulation, strengthens muscles, protects the brain, and even helps manage chronic diseases.
