It's time for sun (and protection!)

Published in December 20, 2024

With the arrival of the hottest time of the year, it’s time to enjoy the longer days and extra hours of sunshine that the weather brings. But how can you do this safely while keeping your skin looking beautiful and healthy?

During this time of year, several factors contribute to increased sun exposure over long periods, such as the end-of-year holidays, school breaks, and the ideal weather for spending more time at the pool, in parks, and at the beach.

And that’s when the problems start to appear: dryness, flaking, spots, redness, and sunburn become more common and, worse still, contribute to premature aging due to the effects of ultraviolet rays. In the long term, the incidence of skin cancer even increases.

This is very concerning. According to the National Cancer Institute (INCA), skin cancer accounts for 27% of all malignant tumors diagnosed in Brazil. However, despite being the most common type, it has a low mortality rate and can be treated and, above all, prevented.

That is why it is important to emphasize the importance of daily care for the largest organ in the human body: our skin.

  • Stay hydrated by drinking enough water and other fluids;
  • Apply sunscreen to your entire body every day, at least 30 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every 2 hours;
  • Use plenty of body moisturizer. It helps create a barrier that maintains the skin’s proper moisture level and, consequently, keeps it hydrated;
  • Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.;
  • Eat foods rich in beta-carotene. It is a natural antioxidant known for protecting against ultraviolet rays. It is found in carrots, pumpkin, apples, papaya, and other orange-colored fruits and vegetables;
  • When showering, use soaps that are suitable for your skin type. The water temperature should be cool or lukewarm to prevent dryness.

To further help prevent sun exposure, talk to your dermatologist about dietary supplements containing antioxidants, such as the combination of astaxanthin and lutein. The first helps inhibit photoaging, reduces hyperpigmentation, and promotes skin hydration. Lutein, on the other hand, offers enhanced protection for the skin against the effects of sun exposure, improves skin elasticity, and filters blue light, which is responsible for the damage caused by UV rays.

Coming home after a day in the sun is even better when you're wearing the right protection!
